JAMES LAYCOCK

Brand designer with an emphasis on storytelling
through succint, and scalable visual systems.

Clear visual expressions and systematic typography, layered together, form the basis of my approach to design.

Above all of that though, I’m just trying to be a good human.

BRAND IDENTITY

ROLE:
LEAD DESIGNER
I spearheaded the rebrand of our agency as we began to grow and needed something that reflected the team, the work, and agency better. We needed to develop a flexible logo system that would help the newly named Creature Theory evolve into the best version of itself. The challenge was creating an identity with enough character to stand out while knowing its place in the ecosystem, taking a back seat to client work in presentations but still looking compelling on business cards and social media. The identity also needed to balance the inherent edginess of the "Creature Theory" name rather than amplifying it.

ICON

The icon captures Creature Theory's constant state of adaptation through implied motion and fluidity. Featuring a geometric interplay of C's that embodies the agency's ability to shift seamlessly between styles, techniques, and solutions. It's minimalist yet dynamic, reflecting an agency that never settles into a single approach.

WORDMARK

Built on an iconic typeface by legendary Swedish designer Olle Eksell, the wordmark balances timeless craft with contemporary confidence. Hand-set and carefully composed, it represents the agency's humble swagger, rooted in design history but unafraid to make bold moves.
